EDITING PHPBB 3.0.x LANGUAGE FILES:

phpBB 3.0.x language files are encoded as "UTF-8 without BOM" (BOM = "byte-order mark"). Since php-scripts can not deal with a BOM, they will display an error-message concerning the "header information".

German authors will encounter the UTF-8-matter especially with German "Umlauts" (i.e. Ä, Ö, or Ü). If these are entered into a php-script just by typing the character via the keyboard, and the correct encoding is not set, the script won't run.

According to the phpBB 3.0.x coding-guidelines it is illegal, to use "html-entities" instead (i.e. "Ä" for "Ä" or "ö" for "ö".

The solution here is an editor, which provides the ability to encode the php-files correctly as "UTF-8 without BOM". Such an editor is for instance "Notepad++".

In an "UTF-8 without BOM"-ready editor - if the correct encoding is set - German "Umlauts" can be typed right from the keyboard.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • The files provided here are .zip-archives.

  • They contain php-files which enable the user to edit and view the concerned MODs in German language.

  • Although translation was done carefully and the language files are permanently tested on a live-board the files may not run under certain conditions.

  • Since a phpBB-Forum may be "modded" with almost no limits, I cannot guarantee the functionality and/or compatibility of my language files with your personal forum setup.

  • Especially I exclude any liability for using my language files, the user will have to use them on his own risk!

  • I strongly recommend to backup the original files of the MODs, which will be replaced by my language files prior to uploading!

  • Support for my language files ist provided in the appropriate threads of the MODs on phpbb.com

  • The language files are provided free-of-charge. When providing the files to third parties the name of the author must be kept as "german_translation thomas.d"

  • The language files can be found in the "/languages/de"-directory of the archives!

    • In a standard phpBB 3.0.x-installation the "/languages"-directory does not exist, you will find a "/language"-directory instead. The MODX-packaging-guidelines dictate, that additional language files must be packed in the "/languages"-directory.

    • Nevertheless the German language files provided here have to be copied to the "/language/de"-directory of your forum!

Have fun!
